Best Things To Do In Versailles (Outside the Palace!)

article

When most people think of Versailles, their minds immediately jump to the grandeur of the palace—the Hall of Mirrors, manicured gardens, and royal opulence.

And while Château de Versailles is undoubtedly one of France’s most breathtaking sites, the city of Versailles itself is so much more than a backdrop to the palace.

At Boutique Tours, we’re passionate about showing you not just the iconic sites, but also the charming, lesser-known corners of the places we love.

In this guide we’ll take you beyond the golden gates, into the local markets, cafés, and hidden parks of Versailles.

🗺️ Welcome to the Real Versailles

Versailles is a bustling city of over 85,000 residents, rich in history, elegance, and everyday Parisian life. Just 200 meters from the palace, you’ll find two beautiful and distinct neighborhoods:

  • Saint-Louis District – This is the oldest part of town, where nobles once lived. It’s filled with beautiful architecture, a stunning cathedral, and charming local shops and restaurants.
  • Notre-Dame District – Home to the famous local market, it’s lively, friendly, and full of little surprises. We’re particularly fond of wandering here before or after a palace visit.

Whether you arrive via the Versailles Château Rive Gauche or Versailles Rive Droite train stations, you’ll have Versailles’ charm right at your doorstep.

And yes—it’s easy to explore on foot... or bike!

🛏️ Where to Stay in Versailles

If you’re looking to stay overnight, Versailles offers a fantastic escape from Paris’ hustle and bustle.
Here are a few top options:

  • Trianon Palace Versailles – A luxury stay just steps from the park.
  • Le Grand Contrôle – Possibly the most luxurious (and historical) stay inside the palace grounds. Think Louis XIV-level opulence, with prices to match.
  • Le Louis Versailles Château Hotel – Elegant and conveniently located by the train station.
  • Airbnb apartments – Stay like a local in classic French apartments with parquet floors, fireplaces, and heaps of charm.

Luxury Stay: The Grand Contrôle hotel inside the palace is ultra-exclusive (expect to pay €2000+ per night). This one is for special occasions!

🌳 Discover the Royal Parklands

Just west of the palace lies Le Petit Parc, a sprawling, lush park that feels anything but “petit.” At over 2,000 acres, it’s home to:

  • The Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon – The former royal getaways.
  • Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet – A storybook-style retreat built for the queen to escape court life. It’s whimsical, peaceful, and completely unexpected.
  • The Swiss Lake (Lac de Suisse) – A tranquil haven with swans, wide lawns, and views of the palace. Perfect for a relaxed picnic or a quiet stroll.

Insider tip: Pack a spread from the market, find a spot near the lake, and enjoy a bottle of wine with a view. Technically, open alcohol isn’t allowed—but as long as you’re respectful (and tidy), you’ll be fine!

🥖 Foodies, Rejoice: Versailles Market Life

If there's one thing that captures the spirit of Versailles beyond the palace, it's the Marché Notre-Dame. This award-winning market is one of the largest in France and has been running since the 17th century. On Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the market comes alive with outdoor vendors selling everything from fruit and cheese to wine, crêpes, and roasted chicken.

Highlights include:

  • Gariguet Produce Stall – Hands down, some of the best fruit you’ll ever taste.
  • The Brittany Stall – Crepes, butter, and salted caramel dreams.
  • Terre de Café – For serious coffee lovers.
  • Guinon Bakery – A family favorite opposite Notre-Dame Cathedral. Expect queues—and the best pastries in town.
  • Annisa the Cheesemonger – Let her introduce you to one of France’s 1,000 cheeses.

Sundays are especially magical. The streets are pedestrian-only, families are out in full force, and there’s often music in the square.

Our fave: Look for the red truck at the market for some of the best Italian coffee around!

☕ Café Culture and Local Life

Versailles is full of charming streets and hidden courtyards that once belonged to noble families, now open to the public and transformed into boutique-lined walkways and café-filled plazas.

Don't miss:

  • Rue de Satory – A quaint street near the palace filled with cafés, bookstores, and restaurants. Ideal for an afternoon pause with a glass of wine.
  • Cour des Senteurs – A once-private courtyard turned into a delightful mini-village with wine shops, souvenirs, and quiet terraces.
  • Saint-Louis Cathedral area – Peaceful and historic, it’s the perfect place to wind down after a tour.

🦢 And Finally… the Swans of Versailles

Yes, Versailles has swans! You’ll find them gliding through the Swiss Lake, unbothered by tourists or triathletes (there’s an annual race here involving swimming in their home!).

As locals, this is one of our favorite places to relax. It’s where history and nature meet, just a few steps from one of the most visited sites in the world—yet far from the crowds.
